Pass H.4842 An Act relative to dental hygienist reciprocal licensure!

The Issue

H.4842, An Act relative to dental hygienist reciprocal licensure, would establish a process allowing dentists licensed and practicing in a foreign country for at least 5 years to be licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in the Commonwealth. This bill, which is supported by the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists Association, would still require testing, but eliminates additional cost and educational barriers.

The bill was reported favorably by both the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure as well as the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing prior to being PASSED by the House of Representatives. It is now before the Senate Committee on Ways and Means.

House Bill 4842 is designed to address the shortage of dental hygienists in Massachusetts. It offers a pathway for foreign-trained dentists, who already possess significant medical knowledge and experience, to become licensed as hygienists. This approach recognizes the valuable skills these individuals bring while still requiring them to pass necessary exams. By streamlining the process, the bill reduces barriers to entry, potentially increasing the pool of qualified hygienists. This, in turn, can improve access to dental care for patients and alleviate strain on the current dental workforce. Passing H.4842 could offer a practical solution to a critical healthcare need.
