Overturn Ban on Hijabs in Singapore Schools and ITE Colleges

Overturn Ban on Hijabs in Singapore Schools and ITE Colleges
The Issue
As a soon-to-be student who identifies as a Hijabi and a Singaporean, I echo the concerns of many fellow Muslim women who are restricted from dressing modestly, owing to the current ban on hijabs in schools and ITE colleges. This policy acts as a barrier for us to fully practice our faith and live out the teachings of our religion. We are part of a country whose pledge stands for "a democratic society based on justice and equality". Is it just and equal when our attire, a significant part of our religious identity, is banned in academic institutions?
As per the statistics, nearly 15% of Singapore's population is Muslim (Department of Statistics Singapore, 2020). This means that a sizeable proportion of our fellow students are impacted by this policy. Yet, the right to religious freedom continues to be governed by school dress codes.
It is imperative to recognize the individual's right to religious expression, thereby making our society truly equitable and democratic. For a country that seeks unity in diversity, this unrealistic policy stands as a contradiction, challenging our societal pillars of justice and equality.
This is not just about an item of clothing - it's about upholding our country's values, allowing individuals to express their faith openly, and providing an inclusive environment for all. By signing this petition, we demand a review of the hijab ban policy, urging the concerned authorities to act towards ensuring religious freedom. Please, sign and support our cause.
