The Black Arts and Culture District

The Black Arts and Culture District

Members of the Black community of San Diego have a long history of generating wealth, providing housing, establishing businesses and demonstrating extraordinary athletic talent and creative skills through entertainment and arts, one of the major components that has been missing is our designation on the map.
The time has come for us to establish the heart and soul of where our culture lives and breathes in the community, The Black Arts and Culture District!!
Help us honor 8 blocks of Black excellence from from 61st Street to 68th Street in Encanto. Decades of collaboration through business and the arts including the artwork of Eddie L. Edwards dated 1992 in the center median from 62nd to 68th and all of the artwork and murals by younger generation artists on the utility boxes, in the Boys and Girls Club and on the walls of the 62nd Street Trolley Station have transformed the mindset of many residents and the landscape along Imperial Avenue and Marie Widman Park.
The MTS Orange Line provides front row access to the ongoing activities by businesses and community organizations within the 8 blocks which has attracted millions of visitors over the years.
The early Encanto Street Fair and recent Diamond Street Festivals have hosted incredible talent and provided hospitality to many greats. We plan to continue these traditions, grow our local economy by encouraging new business and would love to achieve this with freeway signs and a designation by our elected officials. Please sign the petition.
To sign in person, meet local community organizers, artists and for a tour of the 8 blocks, visit Black Family Empowerment Day, 7:30am to 3pm on September 18th, 2021 at Marie Widman Park. Thank you.
