Orthodox Easter observance

The Issue

Approximately 198,000 people of Christian orthodox faith reside in New York City. In recent years we have seen a significant focus on diversity and inclusion of people of all faiths in New York City these include people who celebrate the following: Diwali, Eid, and Lunar New Year. Traditionally we also observe Catholic holidays as well as Jewish holidays.  The Christian Orthodox remain unseen.

Upon advocating to observe Christian orthodox Good Friday the response from the DOE, chancellors, and mayor's office were that a simple code could be utilized by those who wanted to observe the holiday. This does not appear to be inclusive as the observance remains personal and unseen. New York City being a melting pot for all religions and cultures should make an effort to publicly recognize 198,000 of its residents.

Due to varying religious calendars the year 2024 marked an extensive period of time between catholic and orthodox easters. This brought to light that those following the gregorian calendar were being dismissed in the eyes of the DOE. In order to prevent such occurrences in the future Christian Orthodox Good Friday should be recognized and observed as a new york city public school holiday.
