PETITION
Mayor Johnson, Aldermen, & City Manager:
We, the concerned residents, business owners, visitors, and advocates for Savannah’s Historic Victorian District, unequivocally oppose the proposed construction of a three-story underground parking garage in our treasured neighborhood. This plan threatens our historic heritage, our community’s safety, and the environment.
Our reasons for opposition are urgent and unequivocal:
- Threat to Historic Preservation: The Victorian District’s charm, architecture, and historical significance must be protected at all costs. An intrusive underground parking garage would irreparably harm these treasured assets, marring the aesthetic integrity that draws residents and tourists alike.
- Structural and Environmental Hazards: Construction in this sensitive area could destabilize historic foundations, cause underground water contamination, and worsen drainage issues. These risks threaten the safety and stability of our community.
- Flooding and Drainage Catastrophe: The Victorian District is already plagued with severe flooding and drainage problems. The proposed underground structure will exacerbate these issues, obstruct natural water flow, and significantly increase flood risks to properties, businesses, and lives. The added risk of water intrusion and damage is unacceptable and reckless.
- Increased Congestion and Noise: Rather than alleviating parking concerns, the garage will attract more vehicles, intensifying congestion, noise, and pollution in an already densely populated historic district.
- Community and Cultural Disrespect: This plan disregards the voices of those who live, work, and cherish Savannah’s historic core. It shows a gross disrespect for our community’s cultural heritage, environmental safety, and quality of life.
We respectfully urge the City of Savannah to:
- Immediately halt all plans for this underground garage.
- Prioritize the safety and preservation of our historic district.
- Identify and pursue alternative solutions for parking that respect the neighborhood’s historic and environmental integrity.
- Fully engage with the citizenry transparently and meaningfully before moving forward with any development.
We, the undersigned, stand united in protecting Savannah’s Historic Victorian District—from unnecessary development that endangers our history, environment, and community.
