Oppose the Shift from Plastic Bins to Plastic Bags in Rhondda Cynon Taff

The Issue

As a resident of Rhondda Cynon Taff, I've been alarmed by the proposals to switch our household waste collections from sturdy, secure plastic bins with wheels and lids, to flimsy bags. This issue is personal to me due to the evident increased risk of attracting vermin such as seagulls and rats, which can easily rip open the bags and create a mess in our community. Given that the council has a history of not clearing up such messes, this rings very real and immediate alarms.

Moreover, the proposed changes could cause practical problems for the elderly or disabled residents who may find it more difficult to transport their waste to the bin collection points—especially those living on estates with communal collection points that may be some way from their houses. As we strive to make our society more inclusive, such proposals seem to be a significant step backwards.

Furthermore, it's important to note that the usage of plastic bags instead of bins represents a regression in our environmental efforts; plastic bags can take 500+ years to degrade in a landfill and are a significant threat to marine life. These reasons alone should be enough to reconsider such a reckless proposal.

Therefore, fellow residents of Rhondda Cynon Taff, I urge you to join me in insisting that the RCTCBC Cabinet rethink this detrimental step, and consider alternatives that keep our streets clean, our residents safe and our environment protected. Sign this petition to demonstrate our collective refusal to transition from plastic bins to plastic bags.

I also noticed that RCTCBC has decided to only allow us 7 days to react to these proposed changes!
