The Issue

ALTHOUGH DONATIONS FOR THIS PETITION ARE APPRECIATED, THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED… but we REALLY need more signatures so please sign and share!!
The Red Bay area of Walton County, FL has a sand pit (D&H Sand) and the owner is trying to get rezoned to Heavy Industrial so they can build a dump.  This would be disastrous to our local wildlife, such as gopher tortoise, Eastern fox squirrel, black bear, and many more species which are on Florida's Endangered and Threatened Species List, as well as the local creeks that ultimately lead to the Choctawhatchee Bay.  Over 55,000 acres of nature preserve (Nokuse/Stella Davis conservation land) surrounds the proposed dump on all 4 sides.  The Red Bay area has changed very little in the past 30+ years, is relatively unspoiled with old growth forest and located approximately 20 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 13.5 miles from the Bay.
In addition to the negative impact to the environment, we are also concerned about road conditions/safety, health of the residents, and property values.  Rock Hill Rd. currently has dump truck traffic from the sand plant and Azland that has damaged the asphalt.  Many of those truck drivers speed on the narrow 2-lane road and often cross the center line.  There aren't any stop lights at either end of Rock Hill where it intersects with Hwy 331 and Hwy 81, which are already dangerous with the current truck traffic and will only get worse with the addition of the proposed dump.  Health of the residents and property values are also worrisome due to the vermin that will be attracted to the dump, seepage into our well water, and air quality.  If this rezoning is approved, there will probably be additional rezoning so that this won't have the appearance of SPOT ZONING, further destroying our beautiful community.  This area is mostly zoned one household per 10 acres, and many of the residents live on land that has been in their family for generations.
To make matters worse, Dean Burgis, President of Emerald Coast Associates Engineering that was hired by D&H Sand, is also on the Planning Commission!!  Even though he will probably recuse himself from the vote, he is able to influence the other members of the board.

Please sign our petition and join us in opposing this rezoning at the Planning Commission meeting at 4PM on 12/12/24, Freeport Commons Board Room, 842 State Hwy 20 East, Freeport, FL 32439.
