The Issue

Cheshire East Council have recently posted an application on their official page seeking consent to fly a Pride Progress Flag over Memorial Square in Crewe. For my community and me, this location holds profound historical and emotional significance. The square is the site of the Crewe War Memorial, erected in 1924 to honor the memory of the servicemen and women from our area who paid the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts ranging from the World Wars to the Falklands and Gulf Wars. In this sacred space, we gather to remember and honor the heroes whose courage and sacrifices have protected our freedoms.

The decision to place any flag other than our nation's flag on this site is concerning to veterans, families of the fallen, and residents of Cheshire East who value the solemnity and symbolism of the memorial. While we support inclusivity and respect the values that the Pride Progress Flag represents, such a symbol might be more appropriately flown in other public spaces where its message can be celebrated without distracting from the purpose of the war memorial.

Multiple community members, including military veterans who have served in various conflicts, share this sentiment. The memorial square should remain dedicated solely to remembrance, serving as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today. We believe that by keeping the flagpole reserved exclusively for the Union Jack, or flags related to military commemorations, we can uphold the dignity and purpose of this important site.

Therefore, we urge Cheshire East Council to reconsider this proposal and engage with the local community to find a more suitable location for flying the Pride Progress Flag, ensuring that we respect all members of our community without compromising the integrity of our war memorial.

Please sign this petition to help preserve the sanctity of Memorial Square as a place of sacrosanct remembrance and respect.
