Oppose Mississippi House Bill 1484: Protect Human Rights and Dignity

The Issue

House bill 1484 is not about lawful immigration enforcement but about enabling a system that strives on division. The proposed Mississippi Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program reinforces dangerous stereotypes and fuels systematic racism, discrimination, and a culture of fear.

This program is dehumanizing and supported by an evil that used to represent Mississippi… racism. The spirit of this law appears rooted in the historical injustices that have plagued this state and other parts of the US, using coded language to perpetuate the exclusion and oppression of minorities because it can not be denied that racial profiling based on appearance, language, or perceived ethnicity will be enacted to help identify illegal immigrants.

Section 1 (3)(a) states as follows, “The offense of trespass by an illegal alien under this section is a felony for which the authorized term of imprisonment is life imprisonment without eligibility for probation, parole, conditional release, or release except by act of the Governor or the natural death of such person.” The punishment is grossly out of proportion to the offense. Nonviolent immigration violations should not result in lifelong incarceration which are against the principles of justice and fairness. Life imprisonment without parole for a civil matter contradicts human rights norms. This provision dehumanizes individuals by treating them as irredeemable criminals for their presence in the state and could violate the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.

There is no price in the value of human dignity. Offering $1,000 monetary rewards to citizens for turning immigrants in creates a toxic environment where exploitation, profiling, and abuse are inevitable. Incarcerating individuals for life imposes a significant financial burden on Mississippi taxpayers, diverting resources from education, healthcare, and other pressing needs.

This is not the way to address immigration issues. Mississippi deserves policies rooted in fairness, compassion, and justice—not fear and exploitation that degrades our communities. Mississippi also has a history of resilience and unity, and I urge you to honor these values by opposing House Bill 1484. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wisely said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” This powerful reminder calls for unity and mutual respect, emphasizing that, regardless of background or origin, all individuals deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion. It is imperative that Mississippi chooses this path.
