The Issue

We love living in the historic and picturesque towns of Elora and Fergus. It is a peaceful, friendly community with pristine natural surroundings, which we take pride in sharing with our tourist visitors. We are welcoming to new residents and families and encourage community growth guided by our carefully researched Official Plan for Development. Unfortunately, our Official Plan is under threat due to proposed large-scale development lobbyists appealing to the Ontario Land Tribunal. Behind closed doors, the government of Ontario is considering approximately 900 acres of developments that do not conform to our plan and disrespect the best interests of our community.

Appeals to the Ontario Land Tribunal for proposed developments threaten not only our environment but also the very infrastructure that supports our day-to-day life. With only a limited number of bridges providing crucial connections across our rivers, an influx of new developments would lead to significant commuter traffic chaos, making daily journeys cumbersome and frustrating.

Moreover, our rivers are the lifeblood of our community, supporting fragile ecosystems and serving as vital water sources. Development could lead to depleted ground water levels and polluted rivers, endangering both wildlife, our health and our tourism economy. Protecting these rivers is essential to maintain the clean environment we all rely on.

Our local tourism industry thrives because of our rich natural heritage. Elora and Fergus are known for their parks, trails, historical charm and the many recreational activities offered by our unique river landscape. Tourists are attracted by the clean, quiet and quaint natural beauty of our towns. Large scale development jeopardizes our tourism economy, making our towns less appealing to visitors and threatening the livelihoods of those who depend on this vital industry.

It's crucial that we take a stand to preserve what makes our towns special. By opposing development between our rivers, we send a powerful message that the protection of our environment, community infrastructure, and local economy are priorities. Our local government has created an Official Plan for Development that meets the requirements set by the Provincial Government, serves the best interests of residents, protects our natural resources and preserves the character of our towns. Defend our Official Plan from interference of the OLT and short-sighted land speculators.

Join us in opposing large scale development between the Grand and Irvine rivers to ensure the ongoing vitality and sustainability of our beloved Elora and Fergus. Sign this petition today and let's work together to protect our community's future.
