Oppose increased private health costs for over 65s
The issue
After a lifetime of contributing to society, working hard, paying taxes, and supporting my family, I finally reached the age of retirement. I have spent more than 45 years contributing to these taxes with the hope of enjoying life post-retirement. However, it appears that the Labor government's decision to increase private health insurance costs for those over 65 is poised to undermine this dream for over 3 million Australians.
The proposed changes, described by Mark Butler as efforts to combat ageing unfairness, seem to be anything but fair. While the youth stand to inherit legacies, those of us who have willingly stepped aside from the workforce to make way for them are being penalized. With the retirement age now extended to 67, retirees are pushed out, ostensibly to save costs, only to be expected to shoulder heavier financial burdens when it comes to healthcare.
This policy risks affecting the well-being and financial security of millions of Australians who have diligently worked all their lives. It's essential to understand that this is not just a policy change; it's a fundamental shift in how we value contributions from our elders.
The rationale behind increasing costs for the elderly, who are the most vulnerable and require more medical attention, is baffling. The expectation that retirees should pay more for their healthcare seems counterintuitive and out of touch with the spirit of fairness and support that any government should uphold.
We must question Labor's commitment to 'the people,' and more importantly, to the age groups that have built and shaped our current society. This proposed change suggests that the government is no longer championing the rights and needs of its older citizens.
We call on the Labor government to reconsider this policy and instead work towards a fairer healthcare system that respects the decades of contribution by its senior citizens. Let us not place undue burdens on those who have given so much already.
Please join me in opposing these changes and urge the government to create policies that genuinely reflect care and compassion for all age groups. Sign this petition to voice your support for a fair and equitable healthcare system.
