Open Statement from South Azerbaijani Academics and Professionals on the War in Iran
The issue
We, the undersigned South Azerbaijani academics, researchers, scientists, technologists, and artists, express our deep concern for the safety, dignity, and future of people across Iran, especially our compatriots in South Azerbaijan, during this difficult and uncertain period, as the ongoing war increasingly exposes civilian communities to violence and bombardment.
For more than a century, the people of South Azerbaijan have faced persistent challenges affecting their cultural, linguistic, and civic life. Restrictions on education in the mother tongue, pressures on cultural expression, and structural inequalities have created long-standing concerns among South Azerbaijanis about the preservation of their identity, language, and heritage. These realities have shaped the lived experiences of generations and have left many feeling that their cultural and social rights remain insufficiently protected.
Today, these historic concerns are compounded by the instability and violence affecting the region. Ordinary civilians—families, students, workers, and children—now find themselves living under the shadow of conflict and bombardment. No community should have to endure such fear or uncertainty, particularly one that has already carried the burden of historical marginalization.
As members of the South Azerbaijan Diaspora, we believe that sustainable peace, stability, and development are only possible when the dignity and rights of all peoples are recognized and respected. The protection of the environment, infrastructure, cultural identity, the right to language and education, and the ability of communities to participate meaningfully in shaping their future are fundamental principles recognized in international human rights frameworks.
Our statement is not one of hostility toward any people. Rather, it is a call for awareness, responsibility, and constructive engagement. We stand in solidarity with all civilians affected by violence and instability, and we affirm the universal principle that every people deserves to live in safety, dignity, and freedom from fear.
Despite the pain of the present moment, we remain hopeful about the future. South Azerbaijan possesses a vibrant society, a rich cultural heritage, and generations of educated and capable individuals committed to building a peaceful and prosperous region. With recognition of rights, mutual respect, and genuine dialogue, a future is possible in which the people of South Azerbaijan can fully preserve their language and culture, develop their institutions, and contribute constructively to regional stability and progress.
We therefore call on the international academic community, civil society, and policymakers to pay attention to the situation of South Azerbaijani people, to support peaceful solutions, and to encourage the protection of fundamental cultural and civic rights.
Our hope is simple yet profound: that the people of South Azerbaijan, like all peoples, may live without fear, protect their identity and heritage, and realize their full rights and potential in a peaceful and just future.
