Change the system of grading using "levels" (1-4) to percentages!

The Issue

Students all across Ontario are used to receiving their grades as “levels” using the “level” grading system; Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. Many students, teachers, and parents are unsatisfied with this system. Levels are given according to whether a student met the requirements outlined in a rubric, or not. Many of these rubrics are developed by the teachers, and the teachers will simply circle the level (or in between two levels) that they feel a student deserves. Why is it a teacher’s decision, one opinion, on whether I answered a question correctly? Myself, and my peers are too often discouraged and frustrated when receiving a “Level 1 or 2” after working very hard to complete an assignment, test, or exam with accuracy. Yes, multiple choice sections on assignments, tests, AND exams can be marked according to “Levels”. Not only are students frustrated, but parents are as well. My parents, as well as parents of my peers, do not understand what it means when I come home and say “I got a Level 4- on my test!” Students are given midterms, and final grades as percentages, and are forced to try and convert the levels to percentages if they want to accurately keep track of their academic progress. As a grade 10 student, I feel I am not receiving enough motivation to do better if I receive a Level 1- or 2+; however, if I were to see a 68% as my mark on a test, I would feel motivated to study more and bring my grades up. It makes me upset to see my sister, who is in Grade 7, come home with a Level 4, ask my parents what that means, to only get a mutual response of "I don't know, it sounds good." Gone is the day that grades are based on fact or whether an answer is right or wrong. By signing this petition we are making an effort to reinforce the percentage grading system, so that the education in Ontario today, and tomorrow, is stronger, more effective, and encouraging for students all across Ontario.
