COVID-19: Do not award predicted grades to A level students

The Issue

Unfortunately, COVID-19 is going to affect A level exams this summer. As a result, many students have decided that the fairest solution to this problem is to give them whatever they want for free. There are a variety of reasons these students should be ignored, which I will outline below:

1. Students will not have worked for their grades. If students are told they will be given their predicted grades now, they will not revise at all, meaning their academic ability when leaving 6th form/College will be far weaker than previous cohorts. This will devalue their qualifications and could cause problems at university. Even the possibility of this occurrence might cause students to work less hard - as a result I hope that it can soon be confirmed that students will not receive their predicted grades.

2. Predicted grades are inaccurate. Most students don't meet their predicted grades, Also, the lower predicted grades are, the less likely students are to achieve them.

3. Universities do not have enough places. If all students are given their predicted grades, Universities will have far too many successful applicants.

I will also outline possible other solutions to the current problems:

1. Sit A levels as normal - COVID-19 is recent enough that very few students' studies will have been seriously disrupted. Provided A levels can be sat safely, there is no reason to not sit them.

2. Delay A levels - More challenging logistically, but the extra revision time will help to level the playing field and holding exams away from the outbreak's peak would increase safety.

3. Grade adjustments to those most affected - Some students will have had their studies disrupted a lot, some will have had their studies disrupted a little. If a proper inquiry can be carried out, those students could be identified and given better grades. This should only be done if delaying A levels is unfeasible or very few students are seriously affected.
