Observance and formal recognition of Christian Orthodox Holidays

The Issue

The United States is known for its commitment to religious freedom and diversity. According to Pew Research Center data from 2014, there are approximately 260 million Christians in the country with a significant portion belonging to the Orthodox Church. It's crucial that our education system reflects this diversity by respecting all religious observances.

The New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) is a diverse community that includes employees, parents, students, and other members who are part of the Christian Orthodox Community. These individuals observe important religious holidays such as Orthodox Holy Friday, Easter Monday, and Epiphany (celebrated every year on January 6th). However,  currently we do not have the provision to take time off to observe these significant days. This petition seeks to change this by requesting the NYC DOE to recognize these holidays and grant time off for those who wish to observe them.

The petition to recognize Christian Orthodox holidays within the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) underscores an important discussion about inclusivity and accommodation in a diverse educational setting. The request for the NYC DOE to grant time off for observances like Orthodox Holy Friday, Easter Monday, and Epiphany is rooted in the broader context of religious freedom and diversity, which are fundamental to the United States' values.

Accommodating these religious observances can promote inclusivity, respect for diversity, and potentially enhance the educational environment by acknowledging and respecting the cultural and religious backgrounds of its members. This approach aligns with best practices in educational settings that seek to create supportive, culturally responsive spaces for learning and working.

Moreover, accommodating religious holidays can contribute to the well-being of employees and students by acknowledging their cultural and religious practices, which is likely to foster a sense of belonging and community. In turn, this can impact employee satisfaction and student engagement positively.

By signing this petition, you support equal recognition of all religious holidays within our education system and promote an inclusive environment where everyone's beliefs are respected. Please sign this petition urging the NYC DOE to grant time off for Christian Orthodox Holidays.
