Object to the Macquarie Coal Complex rezoning proposal
The issue
As residents and community members of Killingworth, Barnsley, and the surrounding areas, we are deeply concerned about the draft Master Plan and rezoning proposal for the Macquarie Coal Complex Transformation Precinct, which is currently on public exhibition until 11 August 2026. Living close to the proposed precinct, our community stands to be directly and significantly affected should this proposal move forward.
The presence of increased traffic and large trucks through our neighborhood poses severe safety concerns for our children. Our kids, accustomed to the freedom of riding their bikes and enjoying the mountain biking experience in our area, will face restrictions. This upheaval will not only alter their way of life but jeopardize their safety. We cherish our community's tranquility and the ease with which the young ones play and roam, and the influx of industrial activity threatens to dismantle this.
In addition, our rich flora and fauna, which define the natural beauty and character of our region, stand to be dramatically impacted. The environmental footprint from such an expansive developmental proposal will threaten local ecosystems and biodiversity that have thrived for generations.
Moreover, while we comprehend the need for regional economic planning and transformation from coal mining dependency, such plans must be balanced with the well-being of existing communities. The proposal lacks adequate solutions to mitigate the harm to residents, environment, and local culture, leaving many unanswered questions about sustainable growth and protection of our natural surroundings.
We urge decision-makers to reconsider this development, and we certainly do not want any data centers anywhere near our homes. We need a more sustainable and community-centered approach, promoting economic growth that is resilient and inclusive. We demand a plan that takes into account both the economic future and the vitality of the communities most affected.
Please sign this petition to join our efforts in ensuring that the true voice of our community is heard and that the future development respects and preserves our way of life while seeking economic advancement responsibly.
