Support Bikes Lanes & Streets as Shared Spaces for Manly
The issue
The Northern Beaches Council has proposed a 12-month trial prioritising pedestrians, cyclists and community in the centre of Manly. It includes:
- A 10kmh speed limit along Darley Road, The Corso and Whistler St from Wentworth St to Sydney Rd
- Protected Bike lanes through Manly
- Additional outdoor dining/seating spaces to support businesses with more COVID-Safe areas
- Safer spaces for walking

The vocal minority are objecting, claiming Eastern Hill residents will be disrupted and traffic congestion will be worse.
We need the silent majority to support this trial to show Northern Beaches it must go ahead. Below we explain why this trial should proceed.
Why the Manly Streets as Shared Spaces TRIAL Should Proceed
- Manly needs better, safer facilities for bikes, pedestrians and business in the Manly CBD area.
- This initiative is related to providing more COVID-Safe environments and is predominantly funded by the NSW Government.
- Protected bike lanes are proven globally as increasing cycling and reducing cycling injuries and deaths caused by cars/trucks/buses.
- 10kmh CBD speed limits reduce the risk of car-related injuries/deaths to virtually zero.
- The main roads to North Head - Darley Road and Osborne St are unaffected. Most feeder traffic to Darley Road and Osborne St is via the oceanfront and Victoria Parade or East Esplanade.
- Manly Council has four car parks in Manly providing 990 spaces including 19 accessible spaces and 11 for parents with prams. 200+ further spaces are on the beachfront. The loss of 23 30-minute or fewer spaces from the CBD is minimal.
- Around the world and Australia, these trials have proven popular and successful for citizens and businesses - even if they didn't like the idea initially.
- It's a trial - let's learn from it, not avoid change which has proven to be for the better globally.
