NEW NORTH SYDNEY POOL - A *MOBILITY HOIST IS REQUIRED!

The new North Sydney Pool (set to reopen to the public on 7th August 2026) design provides only ramp access via a council water wheelchair, which necessitates assistance to enter and exit the pool. North Sydney Council has advised to me that it will not be able to provide a *mobility hoist; which was available at the pool before the pool renovation.  Independent wheelchair users are effectively prevented from accessing this facility without external assistance.

This creates a significant barrier to access. Individuals who would otherwise be able to attend independently are now required to hire a career, resulting in substantial additional costs (estimated at approximately $150/visit, accounting for minimum carer fees and entry charges).

This not only limits equitable access but also places an unfair financial burden on independent people with lower limb mobility limitations who are unable to safely use ramps.

Aquatic therapy and exercise are particularly important for individuals with limit ed mobility as they may be unable to participate in weight bearing exercises. Denying independent access to the pool therefore has broader implications for health, wellbeing and rehabilitation outcomes.

After spending $122 million, the least the North Sydney Council can do is return the hoist that was originally there.

Thank you for your support of this important issue.

*A mobility hoist is a mechanical device designed to assist individuals with physical disabilities in moving around their homes or facilities. It provides a safe and efficient way to transfer people, especially those who may struggle with mobility.
