No Public Platform for Genocide: Remove Israel from local Eurovision screening
The Issue
To: Warwick District Council (WDC)
We, the undersigned residents of Warwick District, call on the Council to immediately exercise its "unfettered discretion" (Street Trading Policy 4.7) to remove the Israeli state performance from the public Eurovision screening in the Pump Room Gardens.
Why the Council must act now:
- In September 2025, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry issued a formal finding that the state of Israel has committed genocide in the Gaza Strip. Our public spaces must not be used to broadcast performances that "legitimise" a state responsible for such crimes.
- In July 2025, this Council resolved to “forgo cooperation with authorities, institutions or groups that... legitimise violations of human rights and international law.” Broadcasting this state-sponsored entry is a direct violation of the Council's pledge of non-cooperation.
- The Council administration has claimed a boycott "could be considered antisemitic." This contradicts the Council’s own adopted definition of Antisemitism, which explicitly protects the right to hold the Israeli government to account and states that criticising its policies is not antisemitic.
- Under Section 4.7 of the Street Trading Policy, the Council is not "bound" by existing licenses and has the power to vary conditions at any time. There is no legal requirement to broadcast this entry; it is making the political choice to do so.
Our Demand: We call on Warwick District Council to uphold its humanitarian commitments and the findings of the United Nations. We demand that WDC acts immediately to ensure the Israeli state performance is not shown, or heard, at the Leamington Pump Room Gardens screening of Eurovision on 16 May 2026.
