Don't privatize public housing, ever. As you know, three million low income Americans live in public housing, but, now H.U.D. has proposed PETRA, legislation which would privatize all of these homes. PETRA would turn public housing into for-profit enterprises, with above market rate rents; excluding the people public housing was manufactured for- predominantly the poor and lower middle-class. Public housing is currently the only available housing for low income people in many cities, including many elderly, handicapped, etc., and remains the only defense we have against rising rental prices and escalating levels of homelessness; sadly. Yet, abandoning public housing and giving it over to for-profit enterprises will create considerable hardship and will set a precedent for the privatization of other public entities like schools, parks, libraries, and even federal buildings. This must not happen, please oppose PETRA and any subsequent legislation or proposals like it, and work vigorously to preserve and support public housing, now.
