The Issue

Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the residents of Kansas. When these brave individuals are murdered while carrying out their duty, justice must be uncompromising and absolute. Unfortunately, the possibility of parole for those convicted of murdering law enforcement officers undermines the seriousness of a life sentence and diminishes the sacrifices made by officers and their families.

In Kansas, the commitment to serve and protect requires trust in the justice system. Life sentences need to reflect their most literal meaning—without the option of parole—especially in cases involving the murder of sworn law enforcement officers. When convicted individuals seek  parole, it causes additional trauma and heartache for the families of the fallen officers and the communities they served.

Statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reveal that on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty in the U.S. every 58 hours. This harrowing statistic underscores the need for stringent legal measures that ensure justice for officers who sacrifice their lives.

Kansas has the opportunity to lead by example and fortify its stance against these heinous crimes by ensuring that those who murder officers receive life sentences without the possibility of parole, guaranteeing that justice is truly served and public safety is prioritized. Addressing this legal loophole will offer peace of mind to law enforcement families and the citizens they protect, reaffirming our collective commitment to justice.

Sign this petition to urge Kansas lawmakers to take definitive action in implementing legislation that prohibits parole for anyone convicted of murdering a law enforcement officer. Together, we can support our officers and honor their ultimate sacrifice.
