No land sell-off at Queen's Park, Harborne

No land sell-off at Queen's Park, Harborne
The Issue
To: Birmingham City Council
From: Concerned Residents and Supporters of Queen’s Park, Harborne
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed sale of land, including the former bowls pavilion, at Queen’s Park, Harborne.
Queen’s Park is a cherished public space that has served the local community for generations. The land proposed for sale was purchased by the City Council in 1906 and over the years has been a valued area of the park, including the site of the bowls pavilion. A recent consultation by the City Council on planned improvements to the park has generated considerable interest from local residents regarding possible new facilities, including possibly repurposing the former bowls pavilion for community benefit — as a café, activity hub, education space, or shared meeting venue, for example.
We believe this proposed sale is short-sighted and undermines both the integrity of Queen’s Park and the future needs of the community.
Selling parkland and buildings should not be the solution to local authority financial challenges — it is a permanent and irreversible loss. Once it is gone, it is gone forever.
We call upon Birmingham City Council to:
- Halt any plans to sell the land including the former bowls pavilion.
- Engage with local residents, community groups including the Friends of Queen’s Park and other stakeholders to explore sustainable, community-focused uses for the land and building.
- Commit to preserving Queen’s Park as a wholly public space for current and future generations.
Queen’s Park is not for sale - let’s keep it in public hands.
