The Issue

According to our recent research, we found out that most school-aged girls could not afford to buy products for personal hygiene. This has caused 1 in 3 girls to miss school and learning at least once because they do not have period products. "Our parents struggle to pay for our school costs. Because of this, buying pads is not a top priority”

In Nigeria, period poverty has not gotten much attention from the governments. While WASH facilities in some schools have been improved, a larger percentage of schools we visited do not have adequate WASH facilities needed for safe menstrual hygiene management.

According to our research, we found that 17% of school-aged girls in Nigeria miss school due to their period while 45% have difficulty affording period products. 44% of these girls are not confident in their knowledge of menstrual hygiene. As we might have known, this will greatly affect their learning outcomes and development.

We are calling on the Nigerian Government to;

- Make free, sufficient, and quality sanitary pads compulsorily available for school-aged girls in public schools in Nigeria,

- Promote comprehensive and inclusive Menstrual Hygiene education in all public schools in Nigeria,

- Improve investment in WASH facilities across public schools in Nigeria By Document Women & Sanitary Aid Initiative
