Re-connect Murray Road for pedestrians! Ormond and McKinnon residents are calling for a Murray Road pedestrian crossing to be included within the level crossing removal program at North Road and McKinnon Road.
The issue
The Frankston Railway line is a barrier to movement for pedestrians and bicycle riders around Ormond and McKinnon. The barrier means residents are forced to add an extra 1km to their trips around the local neighbourhood. This is leading to increased traffic congestion and unsafe streets for our children.
The level crossing removal program taking place in Ormond and McKinnon will improve the movement of motor vehicles along North Road and McKinnon Road. Incorporating a pedestrian and bicycle crossing at Murray Road into this program is a cost effective way to improve pedestrian and cycling movements around the local area, decreasing traffic and conflict between cyclists and cars on North Road and McKinnon Road.
Murray Road could provide a vital link connecting residents to their destinations. Most obviously it services Ormond Primary School and connects residents to the west to McKinnon Primary School and Secondary College. Facilitating pedestrian and cycling trips along Murray Road would mean children can safely walk and ride to school without contesting with the cars on North Road and McKinnon Road.
By re-connecting Murray Road for pedestrians and cyclists, this will reduce the distance people have to travel. For many residents it would mean reducing travel distance by 1km! Suddenly trips to see friends or go to school that were simply to far to walk or cycle can easily be done by everyone in the household.
Providing a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists is vital for encouraging active travel. Recently, a student was knocked off his bike riding home from school on McKinnon Road due to the on-road congestion; this student spent the night in hospital.
Reinstating the crossing at Murray Road, within the level crossing program, is the most cost effective way to improve the road network for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
Don't let the politicians do only half the job! Sign our petition now and demand a pedestrian crossing for Murray Road. Or .... demand Murray Road be reconnected.
