When asked about famous Houston locals like JJ Watt and Deandre Hopkins petitioning the NFL to return the Oilers' name and branding rights back to Houston, Amy Adams Strunk, current controller of the Tennessee Titans, told reporters the ask was “Very interesting, except the Oilers don’t have anything to do with the Texans,” she said. “So that’s a hard no.”

For any football fanatic who ever had the pleasure of watching Warren Moon throw a sideline touchdown or Earl Campbell rumble down the field to extend a drive knows this to be a deeply concerning comment. The Oilers' called Houston home for more than 50 years and maintained an identity that was quite unlike any other team in the league. From Bud Phillips' big cowboy hat to the "Luv Ya Blu" uniforms to a Houston-unique nod to the Oil and Gas industry in the team name, the Oilers were undeniably big and bold and beautiful--but also undeniably Houstonian. Sure, the Oilers spent a few  seasons in Tennessee before re-branding, but no one can deny the deep cultural impact of the Oilers' name and identity not on Nashville, but in the city they spent the large majority of their playing years: Houston. The best example of the Titans not appreciating the Oiler namesake? They changed their name just two seasons after moving from Houston.

After being accepted into the Titans Ring of Honor, Warren Moon told reporters he didn't think "it felt right", being honored in Tennessee, because he never even played for the team in Tennessee. When the Titans bought the Oilers, they bought more than the name of a team or the rights to wear their jersey, they bought a piece of Houston's history.

By signing this petition, we are asking for Texas Governor Greg Abbott to step-in and ask both the ownership of the Titans and Roger Goodell to reopen consideration of a licensing and intellectual property deal with the Houston Texans or for the State legislature of Texas to consider legislating protection for the Oiler name in connection with our beautiful city. The Oiler name is apart of who we are as Houstonians and as Texans, and no private business conflicts should interfere with our connection to our heritage.
