No place for The Eagle Quarter in Historic Market town Newbury !
The Issue
Newbury is a beautiful market town dating back to 1086, when it was mentioned in the doomsday book .
There is a development that is in the works for the shopping centre known as The Kennet Centre , the intention is to demolish this building and replace it with a nine stories of flats with shops .
The development is not in keeping with this beautiful town and will look out of place in the town centre , it is in no way sympathetic to our historical town.
It is not that we oppose a development on the site we believe that it should suit the character of our market town , we believe the behaviour of the developers demanding we accept a nine story development or they will resubmit their original eleven story development to amount to bully us in to accepting something not suitable for its surroundings. It’s most certainly not a nice backdrop for The Catherine Wheel Public House which dates back to 1761, the developers are not in anyway being architecturally sensitive to this historical area of Newbury.
We believe the developers and architects should look to Inchers Yard and Weavers walk for inspiration, rather than larger towns and cities.
