Save Thirst From Being Put Out of Business!

The Issue

After ten years in business, we lost our lease at 187 Dekalb Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and must relocate. After searching within and outside our neighborhood for almost two years, we finally found a convenient location that allows us to stay in Fort Greene at 11 Greene Avenue, a mere three blocks, a convenient location just steps from the subway. But The Greene Grape, a group of stores including a grocery store, a more traditional wine shop, a café, and an ice cream shop, is asking the State Liquor Authority to block us from moving there. The Greene Grape is owned by Amy Bennett, an attorney and serial opposer of new liquor license businesses coming into the area.  Meanwhile her business has thrived, as has ours, and we've co-existed from our inception.

We have been active proponents and educators of natural wine and its philosophy, and have helped ignite the growth of interest in natural, organic, and biodynamic wines.  The survival of small, independent winemakers we represent is dependent on the survival of businesses like ours.

Please email the State Liquor Authority, our elected officials, and Amy as well, and let them know our new location will be more convenient for you. Let them know that these two businesses complement each other more than compete. If The Greene Grape succeeds, we will effectively be put out of business.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Contact our local elected officials and ask them to tell the State Liquor Authority that the neighborhood supports Thirst’s plan to save its business by moving to a new location.

 Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams: 718-802-3700 / askeric@brooklynbp.nyc.gov

 City Councilmember Laurie Cumbo: 718-260-9191 / LCumbo@council.nyc.gov

 State Senator Velmanette Montgomery: 718-643-6140 / montgome@nysenate.gov

 State Assemblymember Walter Mosley: 718-596-0100 /MosleyW@assembly.state.ny.us

Contact The Greene Grape’s owner, Amy Bennett, Esq., (info@greenegrape.com) and tell her that if she succeeds in putting Thirst out of business, you won’t be shopping at The Greene Grape anymore.

Contact the New York State Liquor Authority (jacqueline.held@sla.ny.gov) and tell them that there is room in the neighborhood for both Thirst and The Greene Grape.

We are so thankful for your support over the years and hope to continue serving you in the years to come.
