Urge Netflix to launch a Bhavesh Joshi Superhero Universe

The Issue

NOTE: Watch Bhavesh Joshi Superhero on Netflix if you haven't!

For years, our Indian film industry has been languishing under the shadow of Hollywood as their movie behemoths come and trample the box office every year. Our film industry has produced potential gems which if nurtured properly can definitely achieve a similar standard. With the wave of the novel Coronavirus, the film industry has faced a sea of change as more and more films are landing on the OTT platforms to reach their audience, Netflix India being the latest to be doing so. Coincidentally, some of our films that hold the ability to evolve into a shared movie universe are also streaming on Netflix. Not only that, but even their makers are also involved with their future projects ready to be launched on the same platform.

If you've been following pop culture news lately, you are probably aware of how #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement seemingly did the impossible task of bringing back the original Director's Cut version of Justice League, a movie which was panned worldwide, due to the finished product being a corrupted version of the original idea.

Now, if you're a film buff in India or elsewhere, a comparatively smaller movie, in terms of production value, although not in scope or its storytelling was released in India in 2018. It was an original story, known as Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. It was directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, produced by his and Anurag Kashyap's now-defunct production company, Phantom Films. It starred Harshavardhan Kapoor as a vigilante who's trying to continue his deceased friend's crusade for justice. It was criminally overlooked when it was released, but it's streaming on Netflix.now. With its gritty storytelling approach, it is our answer to Nolan's Batman. But why stop at that. Why should we break a wall, create a door in that empty space, and keep that door closed? Shouldn't we keep it open for more?

And why just stop there. Over the years, our filmmakers have gifted us movies like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, Jagga Jasoos, Mard ko Dard Nahi Hota, then why haven't we acted upon them. I'm sure we have the answers, but this is our moment to move forward. So please sign, share and make our (your and mine) plea heard because 'Qasam kha li maine, Qasam kha li...'. We want to see a movie universe, beginning with Bhavesh Joshi!
