Nepal Needs Accountability: Investigate Protest Killings and Corruption
The Issue
Nepal is a nation rich in culture, resilience, and community spirit. But for too long, its’ potential has been crippled by corrupted politicians.
In early September, the government suddenly banned major social media platforms, claiming it was to “regulate misuse.” With no deadline or preparation, the impact was devastating: small businesses lost vital income streams, and millions of Nepalis working abroad were cut off from their families. This showed a shocking lack of foresight and care for citizens’ livelihoods and well-being. To many, it was seen not as a regulation, but as an attempt to silence outrage over corruption and the elite lifestyles of politician family members that were being widely exposed online.
On September 8, Nepalis - led largely by young people - took to the streets to demand accountability, transparency, and justice. Instead of listening, the government responded with brutal force. What began as a peaceful protest turned into tragedy when security forces, armed with government approval to use live ammunition, opened fire on unarmed demonstrators. This reckless authorisation led to at least 19 deaths and hundreds of injuries, a grave violation of human rights that cannot be ignored. Those who sought justice paid the highest price.
We cannot allow their sacrifices to be forgotten.
Our demands
We call on the international community - including the United Nations, Amnesty International, and Nepal’s global partners - to:
- Investigate and resign those who approved live ammunition.
- Conduct an independent investigation into the killings and injuries of protesters.
- Hold Nepali leaders accountable for corruption and abuse of power, including scrutiny of failed taxpayer-funded projects and assets hidden abroad.
- Push for real reforms: an independent anti-corruption commission, transparency in governance, and protection of free expression.
This is not only a call for justice, but a call for solidarity. The people of Nepal deserve to live in a nation where integrity, fairness, and opportunity replace corruption and oppression.
