Need Board of Trustee - Ko Taku Reo
The issue
We, Canterbury Parents of Deaf Children (CPODC), are parents of Deaf children, and concerned members of the Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ community. Email: cpodcinc@gmail.com
Now we want some action!
Since 2022, Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ has been without a Board of Trustees, with only a Commissioner appointed by the Ministry of Education. They also have an acting Principal. We feel this situation does not contribute to the growth and development we desire for our Deaf children’s education.
Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ has a monopoly on New Zealand’s Deaf Education - they are NZ’s only education provider for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. They play an essential role in nurturing these young minds, making sure they have quality education. They also play a vital role in language transmission and language development for deaf children and their families. However, without parental involvement and Deaf community in leadership roles such as those provided by a Board of Trustees, we are missing out on important perspectives that can shape policies and strategies better suited to our Deaf children's unique needs.
Having no Board of Trustees leaves governance mostly in the hands of one individual - the Commissioner - which goes against best practices in educational governance that advocate shared responsibility among stakeholders.
We believe it is time to establish a strong parent and community-led Board of Trustees! Once this is set up, we can have the Commissioner removed and have a parent/community-led process to recruit a new Principal for Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ.
Please join us for action NOW! We demand that:
- A new Board of Trustees at Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ to be established now, not later.
2. The Commissioner is removed.
3. The Board of Trustees is responsible to recruit a new Principal.
