To ensure the Tiger is kept as India's National Animal
The Issue
The NDA government have plans to change the national animal of India from the majestic tiger to the equally majestic Asiatic lion. Both are sublime creatures and I have had the privilege of witnessing both in the wild.
In 1972, the tiger was adopted as a national animal in part because of its worldwide importance and being found across the country; (presence of a national animal cannot be concentrated in just one or two states). Also the tiger is in need of strict protection all over the country.
Approximately 2200 tigers are found across 17 states which is 70% of the worlds population found in India whereas the Asiatic lion's population is estimated at 411, and is confined to Gir National park, Gujarat.
Six tiger reserves in India contribute between Rs 8.3 billion to Rs 17.6 billion in the form of monetary benefits to people every year.
The move could pave the way for clearance of industrial projects near tiger sanctuaries. I do not have the slightest idea why the government would take so much interest in having a new national animal in books, it could be because of the "Make in India" campaign has a lion as a mascot or it could be anything else. But what I know is that not enough is done to conserve our forest and wildlife. It took great pain in bringing back the tigers from near extinction (and they are still not exactly very safe). The government should focus on saving our animals and forest instead of paying attention to stupid proposals.
