Georgia Grace started this petition to Alcoholics Anonymous and

About four times a week I sit in an NA meeting, a place I go to stay alive, a place I go to manage my addiction within a community of fellow addicts. I owe my life to these meetings, and can rely on them as a place to shed light, even in the darkest of times.

At the end of every meeting someone reads ‘We Do Recover’ - a beautiful reading that gives us all hope that no matter the pain we are in, there is a way out.  It is the moment we are all reassured that there is a solution, and that we are sitting in it. That solution is Narcotics Anonymous. However, for anyone in the room who doesn’t identify to or relate to the term ‘man’ it doesn’t have quite the same effect. Every time someone reads that reading, I, and many others, are forced, for a second, to feel slightly less included. This comes at the line:

‘For the first time in Man’s entire history, a simple way has been proving itself in the lives of many addicts. It is available to us all. This is a simple spiritual - not religious - programme known as Narcotics Anonymous.’

It might not seem like much, but language matters.  It may have once, but today the term ‘man’ just does not feel inclusive to all the other gender identities this world has - woman, man, transgender, gender neutral, non binary, agender and pangender, to name a few. Everyone’s history matters.

Please take a second to sign this petition to change the reading to ‘peoples/our/humans entire history’ so that the millions of people recovery from addiction feel as much a part of the community as the men do.

Thank you
