Reject Woolworths Mosman Junction proposal. Preserve the village atmosphere!

The issue

Mosman Council is currently assessing a DA lodged by Woolworths to build a metro supermarket on Military Road, Mosman Junction. Located mid block between Belmont Road and Gouldsbury Street.

It involves the demolition of the three (3) adjoining buildings. Consolidating the three (3) sites into a single site. And construction of a new larger building across the consolidated site. The front facades of the existing buildings will be retained.

I believe the proposed use of the consolidated site as a supermarket is inappropriate and should be rejected for the following reasons;

#1 Parking.

Council parking regulations require one (1) car parking space for every seventeen (17) square meters of retail floor space.

This application is for 500 square meters of retail floor space. Therefore, thirty (30) car spaces are required for it to comply.

However, only twenty (20) car spaces are proposed. This represents a shortfall of ten (10) car parking spaces. This is a significant non compliance with council controls. All applicants, even multinationals, should comply by the rules.

#2. Traffic congestion.

Surburban supermarkets generate high levels of traffic movements.

Traffic volumes along Military Road already exceed available road capacity during peak periods.

The intersection with Belmont Road is a pinch point causing significant queue lengths and wait times for vehicles travelling in all directions.

A high turnover supermarket at this amalgamated site would significantly worsen the existing traffic congestion.

#3. Pedestrian safety in rear lane.

The rear lane will become a major thoroughfare for pedestrians seeking the most direct route into the supermarket and cafe when approaching from Alan Border Oval precinct. this precinct includes, a primary school, childcare centre and childrens playground.

The rear lane will also serve as the vehicle entry point to the customer car park and loading dock for delivery vehicles. It is narrow and will require cars and delivery vehicles to cross to the wrong side of the lane way during access and egress of the site.

The rear lane does not have a footpath and therefore pedestrians, including many children will need to share the road with cars and trucks. cars and children don't mix.
