More Positive Lesbian Representation in Television

The Issue

Lesbian television characters often face a different kind of representation compared to other LGBTQ+ characters. While inclusion in media has improved overall, lesbian characters are still frequently underdeveloped, sexualised for male audiences, or written into tragic storylines more often than other queer identities. Heartstopper and Heated rivalry are some of the most popular tv shows and a lot of it is due to its gay representation. If either of those series were about lesbians it wouldn’t have been nearly half as famous and successful as they are. Also when there is actually a lesbian tv show it doesn’t get nearly as much interest or is labelled “weird”/“cringy” if you do watch it.  Even arcane, which is eventually a show about a lesbian couple has overlooked by a gay ship that aren’t even together in the series. Society and Media are way too male centred, leaving lesbian representation reduced to stereotypes, male fetishisation or dismissed as “cringe” while all shows centered around men or gay characters becomes a cultural phenomenon.
