SAY NO TO GM FOODS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

The Issue

The question of whether or not genetically modified foods (GMOs) are safe for human consumption is an ongoing debate that does not seem to reach any resolution except in the arena of public opinion. India still is in a dilemma whether to accept this new concept or to reject it.

Genetically modified food or organism (GMO) essentially means food that contains genes which have been artificially inserted. With genetic modification, it is possible to transfer genes from one species to another i.e. from one plant to another plant and also from animal to plant. This is where the problem starts! The fundamental vegetable nature of plants is at stake!

Multinational agriculture biotechnology companies like Monsanto are trying to become the “Life Lord” of our planet through patents on seed. Seed which had been the farmers’ common resource has become the “intellectual property” of Monsanto, for which poor farmers have to pay royalties!Sovereign issues of biodiversity, safe food, food security and trade, are being compromised to promote the commercial interests of big biotech seeds companies.

GM foods tested on laboratory animals by independent scientists across the world are found to cause increased allergies, immune system disorders, toxicity in liver and kidneys and increasing antibiotic resistance. Recent studies have even reported reproductive disorders with the long-term feeding of GM food.

Genetically modified foods are neither safe nor sustainable. In a real sense, food is synonymous with nutrition, health and safety. Therefore, safe food is our basic human right. Instead of promoting GM food, we should focus on improving organic agricultural practices which are kinder to the earth and healthier for humans.
