Saving the harmless giants

The Issue

All rights that we exercise are restricted and relative. We have only human rights. We have no right to take innocent lives of other species. We are just one among innumerable species.

The future of our wildlife and their habitats cannot be claimed only as an animal crisis rather it’s a crisis of human character and its 'inhuman' nature. Time has come to fight against all the cynical acts of human on animals. Amidst all of the nature's creations, elephants are our one such natural resource that are always susceptible to human cruelty. We need more of our own species who will enlighten ignorant individuals of our kind to become acquainted with nature; else we will have no clue how to face the most ravaging sides of nature for hurting and harming its most heavenly creations. To hinder atrocities against elephants, strict and dreadful laws should be enacted against these human criminals. Elephants globally, especially in India, have always been brutally tortured by humans in the name of performing religious rituals or gratifying its greed and amusements. In India, where Project Elephant was launched in 1992 for the welfare of elephants, another heinous crime on May 27 was committed on a pregnant pachyderm in Malappuram, Kerala by allegedly feeding it with a pineapple laden with crackers. After hours of excruciating pain, the mammal finally succumbed to its injuries in the waters of Velliyar.

The cruelty of human race has outshone itself once again. It is affirmative that such a scenario in Kerala is not new. The state with the highest literacy rate has nurtured humans who deprive themselves not only of sound judgement but also basic human sense. Several religious norms in Kerala induce inhumane torture on these poor creatures. They are the country’s icon – but they are chained, beaten, whipped and exploited like slaves. They are the world’s forgotten victims of mankind. True, this incident will have a huge impact all over social media, but will this lead on to proper justice? Elephants happen to be sensitive. Just like human beings, they console each other in times of stress by hugging, they mourn their dead, and baby elephant suck their trunks like human babies suck their thumbs! Let us protect these adorable beings, not only by creating uproar all over the internet, but by lending them a hand. To do something for the beings who cannot convey their thoughts in the form of words like we do. To do right. To bring back love and restore sanity.
