Following the news that was released today (although it was announced earlier on June 23rd), Primary 6 students taking PSLE this year will have some topics removed from their national exams, aka Common Last Topics (CLT).

MOE decided to remove the CLT for the well-being of Primary 6 pupils. However, these students aren't the only ones taking their national exams this year. There are also the graduating cohorts (Secondary 4s, Secondary 5s and JC 2s) who will also be sitting for their national exams in a few months time and have been adversely affected by the HBL arrangements. It would be unfair to argue that ONLY Primary 6 students learn less effectively from HBL as this is a situation that is new to everyone and not everyone can learn as effectively as physical lessons. Although it is understood that perhaps older students are able to adapt and get used to the arrangement faster, we must also understand that nothing is ultimately comparable to physical lessons. As such, there are many students whom may have fallen behind in terms of syllabus content and content acquisition last year and is using this year to catch up on content. However, this is made much more difficult with many unforeseen circumstances this year, alongside a fast paced curriculum so as to prepare these students for their national exams. This has caused immense stress and pressure on these students. Therefore, it will only be fair if CLTs is applied to the N, O and A-Levels as well, so as to benefit the well-being of many more students in Singapore.
