Spearfishing is a better alternative to regular fishing, and should not be illegal. It is more environmentally friendly, as it has the most selective catch by species, size, and quantity. For example, net fishing will often result in by-catch, in other words, the net will catch species not intended to be caught, and these species are killed for no purpose. Additionally, when hook fishing, fishermen often catch and release fish that they did not intend to catch, or fish that are too small to eat. When thrown back into the ocean or river after being caught, these fish generally have a 16% death rate. For fish such as salmon or trout, the death rate is as high as 25%. Spearfishing doesn't need any bait, has almost no gear loss, virtually no non-targeted species impact, and no harm to the surrounding underwater environment. We kindly request that the provincial government consider our request to legalize spearfishing.
