The issue
In 2012 we made history when Australia created the largest offshore network of marine sanctuaries in the world.
But the marine sanctuaries we fought so hard for could be taken away, with the Government suspending and reviewing these protected areas.
Sanctuaries are the heart of a marine park, protecting vulnerable marine life. They provide a safe haven for breeding fish and a healthy feeding ground for our fragile sea life like whales, dolphins, sea lions, turtles and dugongs.
Once the sanctuaries were suspended, oil and gas industries moved in. And now damaging commercial fishing practices are being considered.
The Coral Sea, Lord Howe Island, Geographe Bay, Bremer and the Kimberley - we can’t risk these special places being left without protection.
And it’s not just marine life that benefits. Sanctuaries support tourism, local business and world-class fishing. There is strong support for our network of sanctuaries, with more than ten years of scientific evidence and more than 750,000 submissions from people speaking out in support of sanctuaries.
The Government said their Review would be based on science – right before they let oil and gas exploration sneak in to our sanctuaries.
We need your help to save our sanctuaries. Our sharks, fish, whales, dolphins and sea lions need you too.
