Since the dawn of online gaming, PC gamers have never had to dish out 1 cent for the most basic of services; getting online and playing with a friend. This is the way it should be.

Xbox Live and Playstation Network both offer their respective premium services; Xbox Live Gold and Playstation Plus respectively. With these monthly subscriptions you get access to free games each month, significant discounts on games, and the ability to play online with friends. The latter should NOT be lumped into these premium services. Every user should have the opportunity to simply play online with their buddies, and have the OPTION to pay for the premium service if they want access to the free games and discounts.

The largest online gaming network in the world, Steam, does not charge its massive network of users anything to game online. Any gamer can simply create an account, download their favourite games and party up with their friends. It is not fair that Microsoft and Sony are getting away with charging monthly subscriptions for this same service which in this day and age should be free to all.
