We, the undersigned, demand that the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education terminate any and all contracts with McGraw-Hill LLC. The McGraw-Hill Social Studies content deeply distorts US History with disqualifying and falsifying historical omissions, factual errors, the routine use of the word ‘worker’ in reference to the forcibly enslaved, and the justification of slavery and land theft. Three of the many falsifying historical omissions in the McGraw-Hill textbook, ‘Making a New Nation’, include

1. The 20,000–100,000 Africans who escaped slavery and supported the British are omitted from the narrative on the Revolutionary War, while the 5,000 or so Black ‘Patriots’ are highlighted creating a false narrative of docile Africans supporting their enslavers.
2. The economic output of the enslaved Africans is entirely omitted from the textbook creating the false narrative that the wealth of the colonies was entirely due to the work ethic, agency and ingenuity of the European colonists. This falsification is compounded by the omission that the New England and Middle Colonies benefited immensely from their enslaved people, slavery in the Caribbean, and the slave trade.
3. The ‘True Story of Pocahontas’ omits that a) she was married to a Powhatan man named Kokoum, b) he was killed when she was kidnapped and held hostage for a year by the Jamestown colonists, and c) she was violently treated by the settlers during her captivity. These omissions are designed to create the false narrative that she was able to provide consent to her marriage to John Rolfe and that the colonists behaved ethically.

For more examples, watch the attached videos below. These gross errors directly contradict the mandatory criteria of the California History—Social—Science Framework:

Any gross inaccuracies or deliberate falsifications revealed during the review process will result in disqualification, and any found during the adoption cycle will be subject to removal of the program from the list of state-adopted textbooks. Gross inaccuracies and deliberate falsifications are defined as those requiring changes in content. (P-623)

We demand that LAUSD inform the CA State Board of Education of a) its rejection of the McGraw-Hill textbook ‘Making a New Nation’, b) its intention of creating an integrated US History curriculum and c) its intention of using the freely available New York City Curriculum Guide Black Studies as the Study of the World: A PK-12 Black Studies Curriculum for New York City Public Schools, in combination with other LAUSD US History resources until its integrated curriculum is ready.

Nosotros, los abajo firmantes, exigimos que la Junta de Educación del Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) rescinda cualquier y todos los contratos con McGraw-Hill LLC. El contenido de Estudios Sociales de McGraw-Hill distorsiona profundamente la Historia de los Estados Unidos mediante omisiones históricas descalificadoras y falsificadoras, errores fácticos, el uso rutinario de la palabra “trabajador” en referencia a las personas forzosamente esclavizadas, y la justificación de la esclavitud y el robo de tierras. Tres de las muchas omisiones históricas falsificadoras en el libro de texto de McGraw-Hill, “Making a New Nation”, incluyen:

1. Los 20,000–100,000 africanos que escaparon de la esclavitud y apoyaron a los británicos son omitidos de la narrativa sobre la Guerra Revolucionaria, mientras que se destacan los aproximadamente 5,000 “Patriotas” negros, creando una falsa narrativa de africanos dóciles apoyando a quienes los esclavizaban.
2. La producción económica de los africanos esclavizados está completamente omitida del libro de texto, creando la falsa narrativa de que la riqueza de las colonias se debió enteramente a la ética de trabajo, la iniciativa y el ingenio de los colonos europeos. 3. La “Verdadera Historia de Pocahontas” omite que a) ella estaba casada con un hombre powhatan llamado Kokoum, b) él fue asesinado cuando ella fue secuestrada y mantenida como rehén durante un año por los colonos de Jamestown, y c) ella fue tratada violentamente por los colonos durante su cautiverio. Estas omisiones están diseñadas para crear la falsa narrativa de que ella pudo dar consentimiento a su matrimonio con John Rolfe y que los colonos actuaron éticamente.

Cualquier inexactitud grave o falsificación deliberada revelada durante el proceso de revisión resultará en descalificación, y cualquiera encontrada durante el ciclo de adopción estará sujeta a la eliminación del programa de la lista de libros de texto adoptados por el estado. Las inexactitudes graves y las falsificaciones deliberadas se definen como aquellas que requieren cambios en el contenido. (P-623)

Exigimos que LAUSD informe a la Junta Estatal de Educación de California sobre a) su rechazo del libro de texto de McGraw-Hill “Making a New Nation”, b) su intención de crear un currículo integrado de Historia de los Estados Unidos y c) su intención de utilizar la guía curricular gratuita de Estudios Negros de la Ciudad de Nueva York, titulada “Black Studies as the Study of the World: A PK-12 Black Studies Curriculum for New York City Public Schools”, en combinación con otros recursos de Historia de los Estados Unidos de LAUSD hasta que su currículo integrado esté listo.
