The Issue

We are asking to open all playgrounds, pools and splashpads in the municipality of North Perth immediately, for the benefit of our children's physical and mental health. We know that unstructured outdoor play, social interaction and vitamin D, along with a well balanced diet and adequate sleep are all vital components of childhood development and well being. We also know that a naturally developed immune system by exposure to all types of germs starting in early childhood is essential for lifelong health and immunity!

Our children's lives have been disrupted by the covid19 pandemic in almost every corner of their world by the closure of schools, cancellation of extra curricular activities, social isolation, increased household violence and conflict, increased screen time, decreased physical activity, disturbed routine, change in sleeping patterns and a general sense of fear and anxiety. The above factors are all major contributors to a weakened immune system and decreased coping mechanisms for life. This is not what we want for our children, the future of the world!

According to Canada.ca the death rate of covid19 for people less than or equal to 19 years of age is 0%. According to Huron Perth Public Health website, Perth County, which is comprised of Perth East, North Perth, Perth South and West Perth have had 13 active covid cases with zero deaths (updated as of June 19, 2020). On June 11, 2020 the World Health Organization stated "Available evidence from contact tracing reported by countries suggests that asymptomatically infected individuals are much less likely to transmit the virus than those who develop symptoms." As well, the CDC reported in response to contracting the virus through touching contaminated surfaces it "is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about how this virus spreads."

Why, when we know all the above information to be true, are we depriving our children and the community the chance to connect and enjoy our short season of summer activities? All while doing our best to physically distance, practice hand hygiene and use common sense? Without resuming some sort of normalcy, we are creating a generation of people with anxiety, depression and health concerns.

Should you choose not to open these facilities, we demand a refund of all municipal taxes!
