Make Tiny Houses on Wheels legal in Toronto

Make Tiny Houses on Wheels legal in Toronto

The Issue

The short and sweet of it.

  • We're in the middle of a housing crisis and home ownership is no longer an obtainable goal for the vast majority of the population
  • The inability for many to achieve home ownership (and have equity) is eroding the middle class
  • Tiny homes on wheels (THOWs) aren't the solution, but they offer a meaningful option for those interested in this form of intentional living
  • THOWs mean sustainable and eco friendly living
  • THOWs allow for a home that moves with you instead being caught in the cycle of rent inflation as you pursue work and opportunity in new places
  • This should exist as a legal option for those that want to build safe and attractive THOWs,

TLDR:

We are facing an affordable housing crisis like never seen before! With the average sale price being $909 500, up 11% from last year, the dream of home ownership has all but evaporated as a result of Toronto's too hot real estate market.

According to a newly-released Housing Affordability Report from the National Bank of Canada, you currently need to have an annual household income of at least $178,499 to afford a "representative home" in the Toronto market. With the average annual household income in Toronto being just $109 480 it becomes clear that traditional home ownership is no longer practical, and renting for life only further contributes to the dissolution of the middle class.

Tiny homes offer a real option to tackling this crisis. They're independent and require little to no infrastructure, with most have dry composting toilets, eliminating the 100 000+L of toilet water flushed per person annually; They're environmentally friendly, using energy efficient construction materials and with footprints of 400 sqft or less; They're built to last, often using more premium finishes; but most importantly they're affordable.

With the instability of our economy, we have become a generation of job hoppers. Unfortunately this often means a need to relocate, which in turn means finding a new home where the prices have inflated disproportionately to increases in wages. A tiny house on wheels offers a route to permanent home ownership as your home can move and grow as you do. This safe, attractive, and affordable housing option should be made allowable for those that want to live intentionally, using only what they need.

Tiny homes on wheels allow for closer communities; They prevent urban sprawl; They are sustainable; They create financial security for a generation struggling to get ahead.

Please support me in helping this movement grow and gain legal standing in Toronto and surrounding areas. Please sign this petition, share it with your friends,  and speak with your local counsellor. Let them know that tiny homes are not something we're forced into, but a choice we want!
