Purchase 1901 Savannah Highway and build the West Ashley Farmer's Market

The Issue

In an effort to promote the availability of fresh local food, residents of West Ashley have been asking for more than a year that the City of Charleston purchase a centrally located property on which a community farmer's market could be built that would serve as many of our local neighborhoods as possible. 1901 Savannah Highway, which is adjacent to the City's Firefighter Memorial at the former Sofa Superstore site at the junction of the City's Bike Path and the County's West Ashley Greenway, is the ideal location for this market and venue to become a reality. The two acre parcel offers ease of access and ample space for parking. The owners of the parcel are willing sellers and fully support the concept. The vast majority of West Ashley neighborhoods would have pedestrian access to the market without having to navigate any major thoroughfares. A West Ashley Farmer's Market at 1901 Savannah Highway would provide access to healthy food, aid in farmland preservation and support local food production. Locating the farmer's Market next to the memorial at the junction of the City Bike Path and West Ashley Greenway promotes better health for the residents of West Ashley and will generate more activity and interest in all of these existing public facilities.
