Stop Racism in Johnston

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men and women do nothing” (Edmund Burke).

King’s Tabernacle Church has been blocked by Johnston officials from using their newly purchased church through discriminatory zoning laws and racism. King’s Tabernacle (KT) purchased former Belknap Community Church in Johnston, RI in April 2015 and Town officials illegally compelled KT to apply for “special use” permit. After only 4mins of “public” hearing, KT’s application was unanimously denied by Johnston’s Zoning Board of Review without any reason. RI State law require, at a minimum, that each vote be backed up with the stated reason(s) for approval or denial. Why can’t an African-American congregation be allowed to worship in the same building where Caucasian congregation worshiped for 124yrs?

Johnston Town’s Zoning Official was caught on video using racial slur to describe the African-America pastor of King’s Tabernacle church, after threatening to arrest the pastor and his church members if they came on their church property.

We continue to believe that every injustice should be corrected immediately. Between September and November 2015, before going to the press, we made several phone calls to the Mayor's office to try to meet and talk things over, his office won't meet. In the end, the Mayor referred us to the President of the Town Council, who didn't return our phone calls. When government refuses to act, the people must! Hence this petition.

This reckless abuse of power must stop! Unequal treatment must stop!
