Mornington Peninsula Council, we need a yearly kerbside Hard Rubbish and Green Waste Collection.
The issue
As a long term resident of the Mornington Peninsula, I am constantly frustrated and angered by the amount of illegal rubbish dumping I see. There is not a natural space or quite back road on the peninsula that hasn't been used as a dumping ground.
Mattresses, house hold rubbish, white goods, t.v's, green waste, building rubble all end up dumped with no regard for the effect on the environment, the cost to clean it up, or the fire hazard it becomes. I know I am not the only resident that feels this way, as I often see posts on the local social network sites speaking on this very issue.
I propose the council institute a free yearly hard rubbish & green waste collection like so many of our neighbouring councils, including Frankston City Council have implemented. Tip fees are prohibitive for some residents and not everyone has access to a car or trailer, one free kerbside collection each year would go along way to solving the rubbish dumping problem or at least minimizing it.
I grew up in Mitcham, in the Whitehorse city council area, where they have had a yearly kerbside hard rubbish collection for as long as I can remember. From my experience so much actually gets recycled off the piles before they are collected, there is less for the council to pick up anyway.
Please councillors, residents on the Peninsula love living here because of the beautiful environment and we are sick of seeing it get trashed. Seems much more economical to have a yearly road side collection, than it does to clean a mattress out of a reserve. It must work if so many other councils continue to do it.
