Keep Sir John standing - Leave the Kingston Sir John A. Macdonald statue alone

The Issue

The Sir John A. Macdonald statue at Kingston City Park is under threat of being removed by an ideological movement aiming to take down statues, memorials, public art and monuments across the western world.

There currently remain petitions on the Change.org website aiming to take down the statue as well as Sir John's namesake from Queen's University Faculty of Law.

We, the undersigned, say no. We are putting an end to this ongoing madness, right here and right now.

Based on Richard Gwyn's two-volume biography (John A.: The Man Who Made Us and Nation Maker: Sir John A. Macdonald: His Life, Our Times) and Donald Creighton's two-volume biography, despite his flaws and mistakes, Macdonald was the country's first and most important prime minister. No Macdonald, no Canada.

As the hometown of Macdonald, the City of Kingston and its residents have the right to keep Macdonald's statue standing at Kingston City Park and to do so without threat, without harassment and without any guilt or trepidation whatsoever.

We demand that Mayor Paterson not only refuse this unrepresentative proposal, but to take the issue to the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Canadian Heritage to make a clear declaration in both official languages similar to the one made by French President Emmanuel Macron on June 14:

"The republic will not erase any trace, or any name, from its history … it will not take down any statue.”
