All Zoos Should be Banned
All Zoos Should be Banned
How would you feel if you were thrown in a cage, taken from your home, your family, had people constantly surrounding you, making loud noises and banging on the walls, had nothing to do, but play with a ball and walk around the same area that you have for the past 5 years. That sounds like prison to me. These animals are depressed and lonely. Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Katie Teubner and I’m going to tell you why zoos should be banned.
MANY INDIVIDUALS GET INJURED EACH YEAR FROM ZOOS
Do you see this tiger? It looks happy and at peace. Now, what does this tiger look like? It doesn’t look too happy to me. You know what the behavior of animals looks like in zoos? This. Attack. Over the past 26 years there have been 256 injuries and 33 deaths. Do you know what happens to these animals when someone jumps in their enclosure? They are killed for protecting themselves because of the careless actions of humans.
EFFECTS OF FEEDING ANIMALS IN ZOOS
When animals get fed at the zoo, they are not eating what a typical animal would eat when out in the wild. For example, Dr. Ellen Dierenfelt, a nutritionist from the Bronx Zoo suspected that the black rhinoceros’ were not being fed enough vitamin E resulting in them not being able to reproduce and were suffering anemia. Dr. Dierenfeld discovered that the black rhinos in Zimbabwe had vitamin levels four to five times higher than the rhinos in the zoo. Zoos are harming these extremely endangered animals by not feeding them what they need in order to thrive. These animals begin to rely on humans to feed them every day, resulting in them losing their natural instinct to hunt.
ZOOS LEAD ANIMALS TO DEPRESSION
Zoos, force animals to do tricks and put on shows for visitors; however, most animals don’t like to act as a clown. People yelling and cameras flashing doesn’t make these animals happy, what makes them happy is being in their natural habitat. “Animals get depressed, psychologically disturbed, frustrated, they harm each other, become ill, go hungry, and are forced to endure extreme and unnatural temperatures. These animals cannot live as they would wish to live.” We should not be using these animals for entertainment, but let them be free and wild.
CALL TO ACTION
The solution to ending all zoos is simple, stop going to them. When you go to a zoo, you pay, and that money goes to help the zoos, if we stop visiting these cruel places, they will eventually shut down.
