Mandate Updates to the Ontario Consumer Protection Act for Fair Ticket Re-Sale

The Issue

Many Ontario citizens have seen firsthand how unregulated ticket resale impacts accessibility to popular events. Updates to the Ontario Consumer Protection Act are necessary to regulate ticket resale and put an end to unfair market practices and distorted event pricing.

There is currently no legislation limiting the resale cost of event tickets, enabling unscrupulous resellers to purchase tickets en masse and sell them at exorbitant markups. True fans are frequently unable to secure tickets to events, while others are forced to pay ticket prices high above original retail. Ticket resale is often through the same companies who sold the original tickets, allowing retailers to profit multiple times and creating no incentive to self regulate resale activity. Other countries (Ireland, Portugal and Denmark as examples) have regulations where tickets cannot be resold for more than the original face value. Introducing similar legislation in Ontario would create a more accessible experience and end predatory resale practices.

By reforming the Ontario Consumer Protection Act, we can ensure that fair practices are implemented and that tickets will no longer be a luxury item unattainable to the average citizen. Your support and signature can help take us one step closer to making this a reality. Please, add your signature to bring equitable ticket pricing to Ontario.

You can also contact the provincial government directly to demand change.
