Mandate SROs in All North Carolina Schools at No Cost
The Issue
Every morning, I, like many parents, wave goodbye to my children as they walk into their school, entrusting them to an environment that should be a safe haven for learning and growth. My children attend a private school that, despite its commitment to quality education, lacks the funding to secure the presence of a School Resource Officer (SRO). The absence of SROs in some schools makes them vulnerable in times of emergency, thus raising concerns about the safety of children and staff alike.
The presence of SROs is crucial in all learning environments. Across the United States, the effectiveness of SROs in enhancing student safety and acting as liaisons to law enforcement has been well-documented. According to the Department of Justice, schools with SROs have reported reduced cases of violence and a well-addressed crime prevention strategy. However, in North Carolina, many private and underfunded public schools struggle to bear the cost associated with hiring SROs.
Implementing a statewide policy that mandates the presence of SROs in all public and private schools can ensure the security and peace of mind that parents yearn for. This policy would require government funding to cover the costs of employing SROs, relieving schools from the financial burden.
Moreover, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has the resources and capacity to aid in deploying SROs efficiently. By reallocating existing funds or creating new funding initiatives dedicated to school safety, the state can lead in prioritizing the well-being of its students across all educational platforms, without additional cost to schools.
We urge North Carolina legislators and education authorities to take immediate and decisive action to make SROs mandatory in every school within the state, regardless of its financial standing.
Please sign this petition to help ensure that all children, including mine, can enjoy their educational experience in a safe and secure environment.
